The Hollow of the Unforeseen

you never know
when grief will find you.
it sneaks up on you
in small increments,
tiny reminders
that prick the eye to tears.
an echo of a touch.
an echo of a voice.
entering a room
expectant to find them there.
turning to share with them
a sudden thought.
forgetting
for just a moment
they are gone forever,
taken back
into the universe’s embrace.
